TCu 380A is a non-hormonal, copper-bearing intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) used for long-term prevention of pregnancy. It consists of a T-shaped frame made from low-density polyethylene with barium sulfate for X-ray visibility. The vertical stem is tightly wound with copper wire, and each horizontal arm has solid copper collars, providing a total exposed copper surface area of approximately 380 mm². A monofilament thread is attached to facilitate removal. The primary mechanism of action involves continuous release of copper ions into the uterine cavity, which induces an inflammatory reaction toxic to sperm and ova, thereby inhibiting fertilization and possibly preventing implantation[1][4][5]. The device provides effective contraception for up to ten years and can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted within five days after unprotected intercourse[5][6]. It does not contain hormones.
