Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tea tree oil vagitories are an investigational herbal formulation developed by the University of Sarajevo for the treatment of non-specific vaginitis. The formulation is a plant-based preparation that combines tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) with other herbal extracts, including St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), chamomile, calendula, yarrow, and shepherd's purse. The active components, particularly terpinen-4-ol from tea tree oil, provide antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. The formulation targets pathogenic bacteria and inflammatory mediators associated with vaginal infections. In a Phase 4 randomized controlled trial (NCT04558697), these vagitories demonstrated superior efficacy in improving clinical symptoms of vaginitis compared to single-herb or probiotic alternatives.
