Teazepam is an experimental combination therapy developed by the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research for the treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It consists of a fixed-dose combination of atomoxetine (80 mg), a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (NRI), and temazepam (10 mg), a benzodiazepine sedative. The therapeutic rationale is to target multiple endotypes of OSA: atomoxetine is intended to increase the activity of upper airway dilator muscles (such as the genioglossus) by increasing noradrenergic drive, while temazepam serves to increase the respiratory arousal threshold. This dual approach aims to stabilize breathing and reduce the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) in patients whose apnea is characterized by poor muscle responsiveness and a low threshold for awakening.
