Technetium-99m is a metastable nuclear isomer of technetium-99 and the most widely used radioactive tracer in diagnostic nuclear medicine. It emits gamma rays with an energy of 140 keV, which is optimal for detection by gamma cameras (scintigraphy). In the context of clinical trials sponsored by Region Örebro County, it is utilized to assess the risk of pulmonary aspiration in patients with opioid-induced swallowing dysfunction. The isotope is typically administered orally within a liquid or food bolus, allowing for the real-time visualization of the bolus's path and the quantification of any material entering the respiratory tract. Its short physical half-life of approximately 6 hours minimizes radiation exposure while providing a sufficient window for diagnostic imaging.
