Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium (99mTc) albumin aggregated (commonly referred to as technetium-99m-labeled macroaggregated albumin or Tc-99m MAA) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic, radiolabeled diagnostic agent used in nuclear medicine. It consists of human serum albumin (HSA) aggregated into macroparticles and labeled with the gamma-emitting radionuclide technetium-99m (Tc-99m). Following intravenous administration, the macroaggregated particles mechanically lodge within the terminal precapillary arterioles and capillaries of the lungs during their first pass through the pulmonary circulation. This temporary microembolization allows for the visualization of pulmonary perfusion via single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or planar scintigraphy, making it a standard tool for diagnosing pulmonary embolism and evaluating lung perfusion. Additionally, Tc-99m MAA can be administered intraperitoneally to assess the patency of peritoneovenous (LeVeen) shunts or to diagnose pleuroperitoneal communication in peritoneal dialysis patients.
