technetium (99mTc) nanocolloid is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical consisting of colloidal human serum albumin (HSA) nanoparticles labeled with the metastable radioisotope technetium-99m (99mTc). It is primarily used as an imaging agent in nuclear medicine for lymphoscintigraphy, sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping (particularly in breast cancer, melanoma, and other solid tumors), bone marrow scintigraphy, and the localization of inflammatory lesions. Following subcutaneous or interstitial injection, the nanocolloid particles (typically less than 80 nm in diameter) migrate through the lymphatic capillaries and are passively trapped by macrophages within the regional lymph nodes, allowing for precise visualization of lymphatic drainage and sentinel nodes via single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or planar gamma imaging. When administered intravenously, the particles are rapidly cleared from the bloodstream by the reticuloendothelial system, accumulating in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.
