Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium (99mTc) oxidronate (commonly referred to as technetium-99m hydroxyphosphonate, technetium-99m hydroxymethylene diphosphonate, or Tc-99m HDP) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical agent used in bone scintigraphy (skeletal imaging). It consists of a complex of the metastable radionuclide technetium-99m with oxidronate (hydroxymethylene diphosphonate), a bisphosphonate ligand. Following intravenous administration, the complex rapidly distributes throughout the extracellular space and preferentially localizes in areas of active bone formation or altered osteogenesis by chemisorption onto hydroxyapatite crystals. This allows for high-sensitivity visualization of bone pathologies, including metastatic bone disease, osteomyelitis, fractures, avascular necrosis, and prosthetic joint evaluation, using gamma camera imaging.
