Technetium (99mTc) rhenium sulfide colloid is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent primarily utilized for lymphoscintigraphy and the identification of sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) in patients with solid tumors, most notably breast cancer and melanoma. The agent consists of a colloidal suspension of rhenium sulfide particles, typically ranging from 50 to 200 nm in diameter, labeled with the gamma-emitting radioisotope technetium-99m. Following interstitial injection (such as subcutaneous, intradermal, or peritumoral administration), the colloidal particles are transported via the lymphatic system to regional lymph nodes. Within these nodes, the particles are sequestered through phagocytosis by resident macrophages or by mechanical filtration within the lymph node sinusoids. This localization allows for the preoperative visualization of lymphatic drainage patterns using a gamma camera and the intraoperative detection of sentinel nodes using a hand-held gamma probe, facilitating targeted surgical biopsy and accurate cancer staging.
