Overview

technetium (99mTc) tropantiol (commonly known as TRODAT-1) is a technetium-99m-labeled tropane derivative that acts as a radiopharmaceutical imaging agent. It selectively binds to the presynaptic sodium-dependent dopamine transporter (DAT) in the striatum. Developed as a single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) tracer, it is used for the non-invasive in vivo evaluation of dopaminergic neuron integrity, aiding in the early diagnosis, staging, and differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and other parkinsonian syndromes (such as differentiating them from essential tremor). The agent was originally developed by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, led by Dr. Hank F. Kung, and was subsequently commercialized by the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) of Taiwan and Global Medical Solutions.
