Technetium-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA) is a radioactive diagnostic tracer used for medical imaging, particularly in evaluating lung ventilation and aerosol distribution. It consists of the gamma-emitting radioisotope technetium-99m chelated by diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (pentetic acid). In the clinical research context at Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, the tracer is administered as a nebulized aerosol to healthy volunteers to compare the efficiency and distribution patterns of different nebulizer systems (vibrating-mesh vs. jet nebulizers) using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT-CT). The complex is highly stable and, when inhaled, allows for the visualization of regional lung ventilation and the assessment of alveolar-capillary membrane permeability.
