Technetium-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid galactosyl human serum albumin (99mTc-GSA) is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent consisting of galactosyl human serum albumin (GSA) conjugated to the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and labeled with the radioisotope technetium-99m. It is intravenously administered for imaging and quantitative assessment of hepatic function, as 99mTc-GSA specifically binds to asialoglycoprotein receptors, found on viable hepatocytes. Uptake reflects functioning hepatocyte mass—making it a valuable tool in evaluating hepatic reserve and predicting the risk of posthepatectomy liver failure. This agent is recognized as reliable for liver function assessment, especially in impaired or cirrhotic livers, and has been approved and used particularly in Japan and China.[1][3][5]
