Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium-99m ethambutol (99mTc-ethambutol, 99mTc-EMB) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical developed for the non-invasive detection and localization of both pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB). It is prepared by labeling the first-line antitubercular drug ethambutol with the gamma-emitting radionuclide technetium-99m. The radiotracer is selectively taken up by living *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* bacteria, where ethambutol binds to its biological target, arabinosyltransferase, which is involved in cell wall synthesis. This specific bacterial targeting allows for the differentiation of active tuberculosis infection from non-specific inflammation or malignancy. Developed in collaboration between the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN, formerly BATAN) and PT Kimia Farma Tbk, the diagnostic kit is marketed in Indonesia under the brand name TB-Scan and has received a distribution permit from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM).
