Overview

Technetium-99m ethylene dicysteine (99mTc-EC) is a small molecule radiopharmaceutical used as a renal tubular function tracer in nuclear medicine. It is a metabolite of ethylene cysteine dimer (ECD) and was developed as an alternative to ortho-iodohippurate (OIH) and technetium-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG3). 99mTc-EC is primarily eliminated from the body through active tubular transport in the kidneys, making it highly effective for assessing effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) and tubular function. It is particularly useful in evaluating patients with renal failure, suspected obstructive nephropathy, renovascular disorders, and monitoring renal transplants. The agent is typically prepared from a lyophilized kit at room temperature and exhibits high stability for at least 8 hours post-preparation.
