Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium-99m oxidronate (also known as technetium Tc-99m HDP or HMDP) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical agent used in nuclear medicine for skeletal scintigraphy (bone scanning). It consists of the gamma-emitting radionuclide technetium-99m complexed with oxidronate (hydroxymethylene diphosphonate), a bisphosphonate compound with a high affinity for hydroxyapatite crystals in bone. Following intravenous administration, the agent rapidly clears from the blood and localizes in areas of active bone remodeling and osteogenesis. This allows for the high-sensitivity detection and imaging of bone abnormalities, including metastatic bone disease, fractures, osteomyelitis, Paget's disease, and active condylar hyperplasia. Additionally, technetium-99m oxidronate is utilized off-label for the non-invasive diagnosis of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) due to its selective uptake in amyloid-infiltrated myocardial tissue.
