Technetium-99m rhenium sulfide colloid is a radiopharmaceutical, a colloid formulation of rhenium sulfide labeled with the gamma-emitting isotope technetium-99m (Tc-99m). It is primarily utilized as a diagnostic imaging agent for sentinel lymph node mapping (lymphoscintigraphy) in various cancers, including breast cancer and malignant melanoma. The colloid is designed to be taken up by the lymphatic system, allowing for the visualization of lymphatic drainage patterns. Beyond lymphatic imaging, it is also employed for imaging the reticuloendothelial system, encompassing the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, and for evaluating the patency of peritoneo-venous shunts. Furthermore, it can be used in studies of esophageal transit and gastroesophageal reflux. The diagnostic capability stems from the technetium-99m isotope's decay by isomeric transition, emitting detectable gamma photons.
