Technetium-99m-tin colloid is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used in nuclear medicine imaging. It consists of technetium-99m, a metastable nuclear isomer that emits gamma rays detectable by gamma cameras, bound to a tin-based colloidal particle. After administration (typically intravenous or subcutaneous), the tin colloid particles are phagocytosed by cells of the reticuloendothelial system—primarily in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow—allowing for imaging of these organs and assessment of their function. The mechanism relies on passive uptake by reticuloendothelial cells rather than specific receptor binding or enzymatic action. Technetium-99m has favorable properties for medical imaging due to its short half-life (about 6 hours) and emission of low-energy gamma radiation suitable for detection with minimal patient radiation exposure[4][5][8]. The primary indications include evaluation of liver and spleen morphology and function, bone marrow imaging, lymphoscintigraphy (sentinel lymph node mapping), and occasionally studies related to gastrointestinal transit.
