Technetium Tc 99m albumin is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical composed of the radioactive isotope technetium-99m (Tc-99m) complexed with human serum albumin (HSA). Depending on its physical formulation—soluble, colloidal, or macroaggregated—it is used for a variety of scintigraphic imaging procedures. Soluble 99mTc-HSA is primarily utilized for blood pool scintigraphy and equilibrium radionuclide angiocardiography to evaluate cardiac function and ventricular ejection fraction. Colloidal and nanocolloidal forms are frequently employed in lymphoscintigraphy for sentinel lymph node mapping in oncology, particularly for breast, cervical, and endometrial cancers. Macroaggregated albumin (MAA) is the standard agent for lung perfusion imaging and is also used to detect venous thrombosis. The drug functions by distributing throughout the vascular or lymphatic compartments, where the decay of technetium-99m emits gamma radiation (140 keV) that is captured by a gamma camera to create detailed physiological images.
