Technetium Tc 99m albumin nanocolloid is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical composed of human serum albumin particles of nanometer scale (typically 10 to 80 nm) labeled with the gamma-emitting radioisotope technetium-99m. Primarily used in nuclear medicine, it serves as a tracer for lymphoscintigraphy and bone marrow imaging. When administered subcutaneously, the small particle size allows for efficient entry into lymphatic capillaries and migration to regional lymph nodes, where the particles are sequestered by macrophages within the nodal sinuses. This makes it a gold standard for sentinel lymph node mapping in cancers such as melanoma and breast cancer. When administered intravenously, the particles are rapidly cleared from the circulation by the reticuloendothelial system (RES), allowing for scintigraphic visualization of the bone marrow, liver, and spleen, or the detection of inflammatory sites where capillary permeability is increased.
