Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium Tc 99m carbon (marketed under the brand name Technegas) is an inhaled radioactive diagnostic agent consisting of an ultrafine dispersion of technetium-99m-labeled carbon nanoparticles. It is produced by heating sodium pertechnetate Tc 99m in a graphite crucible at high temperatures (approximately 2,750°C) in a specialized generator, which volatilizes both the technetium and carbon to form hydrophobic nanoparticles with gas-like behavior. Upon inhalation, these submicron particles easily diffuse to the lung periphery and adhere to the alveolar walls. It is primarily used in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or planar imaging for the visualization of pulmonary ventilation and the evaluation of pulmonary embolism when paired with perfusion imaging.
