Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium Tc 99m exametazime-labeled leukocytes are autologous white blood cells (primarily neutrophils) that are radiolabeled *ex vivo* with the lipophilic technetium Tc 99m exametazime complex. The exametazime ligand acts as a chelator that crosses the leukocyte cell membrane by passive diffusion and is retained intracellularly via glutathione-mediated conversion into a hydrophilic complex. Once reinjected intravenously, these labeled leukocytes migrate via chemotaxis and localize to active sites of infection or inflammation. This diagnostic radiopharmaceutical is used in scintigraphy and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging to localize intra-abdominal infections and inflammatory bowel disease in both adult and pediatric patients.
