Technetium Tc 99m fucoidan is an investigational radiopharmaceutical tracer designed for the molecular imaging of P-selectin expression using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). The agent consists of the radioisotope technetium-99m complexed with fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed. Fucoidan acts as a high-affinity ligand for P-selectin (CD62P), a cell adhesion molecule that is rapidly translocated to the surface of activated platelets and endothelial cells during inflammatory and thrombotic events. By targeting P-selectin, technetium Tc 99m fucoidan allows for the non-invasive detection of active thrombi, vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques, and ischemia-reperfusion injury. Development has primarily been driven by academic research institutions in France, focusing on cardiovascular indications such as venous thromboembolism and abdominal aortic aneurysm.
