Technetium Tc 99m-labeled tin colloid is a radiopharmaceutical used primarily for the in vitro labeling of leukocytes (white blood cells) to assist in the diagnosis of infection and inflammation. The preparation involves reducing pertechnetate (TcO4-) with stannous ion (Sn2+), resulting in a tin-based technetium-99m labeled particulate that can be phagocytosed by leukocytes. After labeling, these cells are re-injected into the patient and imaged using gamma cameras to localize sites of active infection or inflammation due to their migration and accumulation at such sites. This technique has been used clinically for over two decades[5][7][6].
