Technetium Tc 99m macroaggregated albumin (Tc-99m MAA) is an injectable radiopharmaceutical used in nuclear medicine for diagnostic imaging. It consists of human serum albumin particles that are aggregated and then labeled with the gamma-emitting isotope technetium-99m. This agent is primarily utilized for lung perfusion scanning to evaluate pulmonary conditions and blood flow, and also to assess the patency of peritoneovenous shunts. The particles are designed to temporarily lodge in the microvasculature, allowing for visualization of blood distribution via gamma cameras.
