Technetium Tc-99m mebrofenin is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical agent used for hepatobiliary imaging to evaluate the function of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts. It consists of diisopropyl-iminodiacetic acid (DISIDA) labeled with the radioisotope technetium-99m. After intravenous administration, it is rapidly taken up by hepatocytes via OATP1B1 and OATP1B3 transporters and excreted into bile. The compound emits gamma rays as technetium-99m decays by isomeric transition to stable technetium-99; these emissions are detected using a gamma camera during single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). This enables visualization of hepatic uptake and biliary excretion dynamics. Technetium Tc‑99m mebrofenin has no known pharmacologic activity at diagnostic doses; its utility lies in its radiolabeling properties for imaging[1][2][3][5][8].
