Technetium Tc-99m medronate (MDP) is a radiopharmaceutical used as a bone-seeking agent in nuclear medicine imaging. In the context of the PERQUAL clinical trial (NCT04745390) conducted by the Central Hospital, Nancy, France, it is utilized for preoperative SPECT/CT bone scan quantification in patients with chronic low back pain. The procedure involves the administration of the radiotracer, which adsorbs onto the crystalline hydroxyapatite matrix of the bone, particularly in areas of active remodeling. By using a CZT solid-state camera to measure the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), researchers aim to identify patients who are likely to respond positively to lumbar arthrodesis (spinal fusion) surgery.
