Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium Tc 99m methionine (also known as 99mTc-methionine or 99mTc-MDM) is an indigenously developed single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) radiopharmaceutical. It is designed as a cost-effective alternative to carbon-11 methionine ([11C]MET) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The tracer consists of methionine conjugated to a chelator (such as DTPA) and labeled with technetium-99m. It is primarily transported into cells via the L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1), which is overexpressed in various cancers. Technetium Tc 99m methionine is being clinically evaluated for the detection, grading, and differentiation of tumor recurrence from radiation necrosis in patients with glioma, as well as for the imaging of breast cancer and head and neck cancers.
