Technetium Tc 99m oxidronate is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used for skeletal imaging, also known as bone scintigraphy. It is employed to demonstrate areas of altered osteogenesis (bone formation or turnover) in both adult and pediatric patients. The drug consists of Technetium-99m, a radioactive isotope with a short half-life, complexed with oxidronate, which is a diphosphonate compound. Upon intravenous administration, this complex preferentially localizes in areas of active bone formation or turnover by binding to hydroxyapatite crystals within the bone. This localization allows for diagnostic imaging to detect various bone problems. It was developed by Mallinckrodt Nuclear and received FDA approval on February 18, 1981.
