Technetium-99m pentavalent dimercaptosuccinic acid (technetium Tc‑99m (V) DMSA) is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used in nuclear medicine. It consists of the radioactive isotope technetium‑99m complexed with the chelating agent dimercaptosuccinic acid in its pentavalent oxidation state. This compound is primarily used for imaging and functional evaluation of various tumors, including breast cancer, head and neck cancers, osteosarcomas, hepatocellular carcinoma, myeloid thyroid carcinoma, as well as for brain tumor imaging such as glioma[2][4][6]. The mechanism involves selective accumulation in certain tumor tissues due to altered cellular uptake and retention properties. It is administered intravenously and imaged using gamma scintigraphy or SPECT to localize disease sites[2][4][6]. The drug is supplied as a cold kit that can be reconstituted with sodium pertechnetate‑^99mTc immediately before use[6].
