Overview

Ultratag (Ultratag RBC) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical kit used for the in vitro preparation of technetium Tc 99m-labeled red blood cells. Developed by Mallinckrodt (now Curium), the kit contains stannous chloride dihydrate, sodium citrate dihydrate, and dextrose. The stannous ion acts as a reducing agent, allowing the radioactive isotope technetium-99m to bind to hemoglobin within the patient's red blood cells. Once re-injected, these labeled cells serve as a blood pool imaging agent, facilitating diagnostic procedures such as cardiac gated equilibrium imaging (MUGA scans), first-pass radionuclide angiography, and the localization of gastrointestinal bleeding sites.
