Technetium Tc 99m succimer is a **radioactive diagnostic agent** used for imaging the renal cortex to evaluate functional renal tissue in patients with **renal parenchymal disorders**. The compound consists of technetium-99m, a gamma-emitting radioisotope, complexed with succimer (dimercaptosuccinic acid, DMSA), which selectively binds the cortical region of the kidneys. It is administered intravenously and localizes to the proximal renal tubular cells, allowing visualization via gamma scintigraphy or SPECT. The main clinical application is the assessment of renal cortical defects, scarring, and differential kidney function. Mechanistically, the tracer binds to sulfhydryl groups in the renal proximal tubules, enabling high-resolution functional imaging.
