Technetium tc 99m sulfur colloid is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent composed of a suspension of tiny particles of elemental sulfur labeled with the radioactive isotope technetium-99m. It is used in nuclear medicine imaging to evaluate the function and structure of organs such as the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. After administration (intravenous, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, or oral), it localizes according to its route: intravenously it is phagocytized by reticuloendothelial cells (mainly Kupffer cells in the liver), subcutaneously it travels via lymphatics to regional lymph nodes for sentinel node mapping, intraperitoneally it assesses shunt patency by mixing with peritoneal fluid, and orally it remains within the GI tract for transit studies. The gamma emissions from technetium-99m allow detection using SPECT or planar gamma cameras. Its primary indications include imaging for hepatic/splenic function and structure; localization of sentinel lymph nodes in cancer; evaluation of peritoneovenous shunt patency; esophageal transit studies; gastroesophageal reflux diagnosis; and detection of pulmonary aspiration[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
