Overview

Technetium-TC99m-labeled Annexin A5 is a radiopharmaceutical agent used primarily for non-invasive imaging of apoptosis (programmed cell death) in vivo. Annexin A5 binds with high affinity to phosphatidylserine residues that are externalized on the surface of apoptotic cells. By labeling Annexin A5 with the gamma-emitting radionuclide Technetium-99m (Tc-99m), this compound enables single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging to visualize and quantify apoptotic processes in tissues. It has been investigated for use in oncology (tumor response assessment), cardiology (myocardial infarction and transplant rejection), and other conditions involving cell death or platelet activation such as endocarditis and thromboembolic events. Several formulations exist based on different chelators or recombinant variants of Annexin A5. The drug was initially developed by Radboud University Nijmegen; other developers include Atreus Pharmaceuticals and Advanced Accelerator Applications.
