Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tecnu is a line of over-the-counter (OTC) topical skin cleansers developed by Quest Products (Tec Labs) specifically for the prevention and relief of contact dermatitis resulting from exposure to poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. The primary mechanism of action involves the chemical removal of urushiol, the potent allergenic oil produced by these plants, from the skin's surface. The original formulation contains a mixture of deodorized mineral spirits, propylene glycol, and surfactants that emulsify the oil, allowing it to be washed away with water. Tecnu is most effective when applied within eight hours of exposure to prevent a reaction, but it can also be used after a rash has appeared to remove any residual oil and prevent further spreading. The product line includes various formats such as the Original Outdoor Skin Cleanser, the Extreme Poison Ivy Scrub (which includes exfoliating beads), and portable detox wipes.
