Tecogalan sodium is a sulfated polysaccharide isolated from various Arthrobacter bacterial species. It possesses potential antiangiogenic and antineoplastic properties. Tecogalan sodium acts primarily by binding to basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), thereby preventing bFGF from binding to its receptors, which inhibits angiogenesis. Additional mechanisms include suppression of periendothelial matrix-degrading activities related to urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and matrix metalloprotease 1 (MMP-1). It was initially developed as an angiogenesis inhibitor for the treatment of malignancies such as Kaposi’s sarcoma and has also been investigated for corneal neovascularization[1][2][3][4].
