TEGA rHS09 is a recombinant heparan sulfate (rHS) biologic developed by TEGA Therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and other viral infections. As a non-anticoagulant glycosaminoglycan derivative, it is designed to mimic host cell surface heparan sulfate, which many viruses use as a co-receptor for attachment. The drug's mechanism of action involves binding directly to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, thereby blocking its interaction with both endogenous heparan sulfate and the ACE2 receptor on human lung cells. This competitive inhibition prevents viral attachment and entry, effectively neutralizing the virus before it can establish infection. Research published in *Cell* (2020) demonstrated that TEGA rHS09 is a potent inhibitor of spike protein binding, supporting its development as a therapeutic agent for viral inhibition.
