Teicoplanin-PMMA is a combination product consisting of the glycopeptide antibiotic teicoplanin incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement. This formulation is primarily used for local antibiotic delivery in orthopedic procedures, especially for the treatment and prevention of infections associated with prosthetic joints or bone surgeries. Teicoplanin acts by inhibiting peptidoglycan polymerization, thereby blocking bacterial cell wall synthesis and leading to cell death. The incorporation into PMMA allows sustained local release of the antibiotic at the surgical site, providing high concentrations directly where needed while minimizing systemic exposure. Studies have shown that teicoplanin retains its antibacterial activity after being mixed with PMMA and offers prolonged elution compared to other antibiotics like vancomycin or daptomycin when used in this context[2][3][4][9].
