Overview

Tejocote root is an herbal dietary supplement derived from the root of the *Crataegus mexicana* (Mexican hawthorn) tree. It is primarily marketed as a natural weight loss aid and detoxification supplement, particularly popular in Mexico and the United States. The supplement is not a pharmaceutical drug and has not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safety or efficacy in treating any medical condition. It contains various plant-derived compounds such as pectin, vitamin C, and flavonoids. However, it has been linked to serious adverse events, including cardiac toxicity, hepatotoxicity, and thrombocytopenia. A significant safety concern involves the frequent adulteration of tejocote root products with yellow oleander (*Thevetia peruviana*), a highly toxic plant containing cardiac glycosides that can cause life-threatening arrhythmias.
