Overview
Telaprevir is an oral, direct acting antiviral medication used in combination with peginterferon alfa and ribavirin for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, specifically genotype 1. It is a small molecule inhibitor of the HCV NS3/4A serine protease, an enzyme essential for viral replication. By inhibiting this protease, telaprevir prevents cleavage of the viral polyprotein into mature proteins necessary for HCV replication. Telaprevir was co-developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson and marketed under the brand names Incivek and Incivo. It was approved in several regions but has since been discontinued due to newer therapies with improved efficacy and safety profiles[1][2][3][6][7].
