Overview

Telbermin (sNN0029) is a recombinant human vascular endothelial growth factor (rhVEGF-165) that was developed as a neuroprotective therapy for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). VEGF is a signaling protein that, in addition to its role in angiogenesis, has been shown to promote the survival of motor neurons and protect them from degeneration. Because telbermin does not effectively cross the blood-brain barrier, it is administered via continuous intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion using a surgically implanted pump system. The drug was originally developed by NeuroNova AB, which was acquired by Newron Pharmaceuticals in 2012. Although telbermin reached Phase I/II clinical trials to assess safety and tolerability in ALS patients, its development has since been discontinued by the primary developer.
