Telbivudine and lamivudine are both oral antiviral agents classified as nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors. They are primarily used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Telbivudine is an L-nucleoside structurally related to lamivudine and selectively inhibits HBV DNA polymerase by causing chain termination during viral DNA synthesis. Lamivudine also inhibits HBV DNA polymerase through a similar mechanism. Both drugs suppress viral replication but differ in efficacy and resistance profiles; telbivudine has demonstrated superior virological response rates compared to lamivudine in clinical trials but may be associated with higher rates of creatinine kinase elevation[1][2][3]. Both drugs have been studied for use in pregnant women with chronic HBV to prevent mother-to-child transmission[4].
