Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Telmed CT is a fixed-dose combination medication containing telmisartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and chlorthalidone, a thiazide-like diuretic. Developed by Medley Pharmaceuticals, it is approved for the treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure) and the reduction of cardiovascular risk, particularly in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy. Telmisartan works by selectively blocking the Type-1 angiotensin II receptor (AGTR1), preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion, which leads to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. Chlorthalidone acts on the distal convoluted tubule of the kidneys, inhibiting the Na+/Cl- cotransporter (SLC12A3) to promote the excretion of sodium and water, thereby reducing extracellular fluid volume and blood pressure. Together, these two agents provide a synergistic antihypertensive effect.
