Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tempocol-ColoPulse is an investigational colon-targeted formulation of peppermint oil developed for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It utilizes the ColoPulse delivery technology, a pH-dependent coating system consisting of a matrix of Eudragit S and a superdisintegrant. This coating is designed to remain intact through the acidic environment of the stomach and the small intestine, only disintegrating in the ileocolonic region where the pH typically rises above 7.0. The active ingredient, peppermint oil, contains L-menthol, which acts as a smooth muscle relaxant by inhibiting voltage-gated calcium channels in the gastrointestinal tract. By specifically targeting the colon, this formulation aims to provide localized relief of IBS symptoms, such as abdominal pain and bloating, while potentially reducing systemic side effects or premature absorption in the upper gastrointestinal tract compared to standard enteric-coated formulations like Tempocol.
