Overview

Tenofovir is an antiviral medication classified as a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), used primarily to treat HIV infection and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It is available in two main prodrug forms—tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF)—which are converted in the body to the active compound, tenofovir diphosphate. This active metabolite inhibits viral reverse transcriptase and HBV polymerase by competing with natural deoxyadenosine 5'-triphosphate for incorporation into viral DNA, resulting in chain termination and prevention of viral replication. Tenofovir does not cure HIV or HBV but reduces viral load and slows disease progression[1][3][4][5][6]. It is indicated for use in adults and children as part of combination antiretroviral therapy.
