Drug intelligence / Profile preview
TAF + EVG is an investigational, topical, fast-dissolving insert co-formulated with two potent antiretroviral small molecules: tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) and elvitegravir (EVG). Developed by CONRAD at Eastern Virginia Medical School, the insert is designed for on-demand, self-administered vaginal or rectal pericoital use as HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Tenofovir alafenamide is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that targets HIV reverse transcriptase, while elvitegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that targets HIV integrase. This formulation aims to provide a discreet, user-controlled alternative to daily oral PrEP regimens, with preclinical studies demonstrating high efficacy against rectal and vaginal SHIV infection.
