Overview

Ziovir is a brand name for tenofovir disoproxil, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI) developed and manufactured by Sunrise Remedies. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection and chronic hepatitis B. Tenofovir disoproxil acts as a prodrug that is intracellularly converted to its active form, tenofovir diphosphate. This active metabolite inhibits the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and HBV polymerase by competing with the natural substrate deoxyadenosine 5'-triphosphate. Upon incorporation into the nascent viral DNA chain, it causes premature chain termination, thereby blocking viral replication. Ziovir is typically administered as an oral tablet and is often used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).
