Tenogenic primed mesenchymal stem cells (tpMSCs) are a specialized veterinary cell therapy developed for the treatment of tendon and suspensory ligament injuries in horses. Unlike naive mesenchymal stem cells, these cells undergo a proprietary in vitro "priming" process that pre-differentiates them toward a tenogenic (tendon-forming) lineage before administration. This priming is designed to enhance their regenerative capacity and ensure they produce high-quality, functional tendon tissue rather than non-functional scar tissue. Clinical studies, including ultrasound tissue characterization (UTC) and histological analysis, have demonstrated that tpMSCs significantly improve collagen fiber alignment and increase the ratio of Collagen Type I to Collagen Type III in healed tendons. The primary commercial product, RenuTend, was developed by Global Stem cell Technology (GST) and is currently marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim following its acquisition of GST. It is administered via a single intralesional injection under ultrasound guidance.
