Overview

Tensopyn is a combination analgesic tablet indicated for the short-term relief of mild to moderate pain associated with tension, such as headaches, muscle pain, and joint pain. It is a small molecule formulation containing four active pharmaceutical ingredients: paracetamol (acetaminophen), codeine phosphate, caffeine, and doxylamine succinate. Paracetamol acts as an analgesic and antipyretic; codeine phosphate is an opioid analgesic that is metabolized to morphine in the liver to provide pain relief; caffeine serves as an adjuvant to enhance the analgesic effect of paracetamol; and doxylamine succinate is a sedating antihistamine that helps alleviate tension. Marketed by Cipla Medpro in South Africa, Tensopyn is a prescription-only medication (Schedule 2) and is recommended for use for no more than five consecutive days due to the risk of codeine dependence and addiction.
