Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tephrosia purpurea extract is a botanical preparation derived from the whole or specific parts (leaves, seeds, roots) of the plant Tephrosia purpurea, a leguminous herb widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The extract contains flavonoids (including tephropurpulin A, isoglabratephrin, and glabratephrin), phenolic compounds, and other phytochemicals, which are thought to confer a variety of biological activities. Preclinical and limited clinical studies indicate that Tephrosia purpurea extract possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, nephroprotective, antidiabetic, cardioprotective, and skin homeostasis properties. The extract appears to act through direct free radical scavenging, upregulation of antioxidant enzymes (HMOX1, NQO1), inhibition of COX-2 and nitric oxide (NO) overproduction, and modulation of hormones such as cortisol, β-endorphin, and dopamine. It has been studied for applications in diabetes, acute renal injury, cardiovascular complications, and skin protection (anti-aging, anti-redness, skin lightening)[1][2][3][4][5].
