Tepugrel is a novel small molecule antiplatelet agent developed by the Tianjin Institute of Pharmaceutical Research. It acts as a selective and reversible antagonist of the P2Y12 receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor for adenosine diphosphate (ADP) located on the surface of platelets. By blocking the P2Y12 receptor, tepugrel inhibits ADP-induced platelet activation and the subsequent aggregation process, which is a critical step in the formation of arterial thrombi. The drug is primarily being developed for the treatment of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and the prevention of thrombotic complications in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). It is designed to provide a potent antiplatelet effect with a potentially improved safety and pharmacokinetic profile compared to existing thienopyridines.
