Overview

Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal medication used to treat a variety of fungal infections, including those affecting the scalp (tinea capitis), nails (onychomycosis), and skin such as ringworm, jock itch, and athlete's foot. It is available in oral forms (tablets and granules) as well as topical formulations. Terbinafine acts by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase (also known as squalene monooxygenase), which blocks ergosterol synthesis—a critical component of fungal cell membranes—leading to accumulation of squalene and disruption of membrane function. This mechanism results in fungicidal activity against dermatophytes and some other fungi[1][5][6][7]. Terbinafine is highly lipophilic, accumulating in skin, hair, nails, and fat tissue[5]. The drug was originally developed by Novartis.
